How to Choose a Newborn Photographer

Whether its your first, second or a third child, many parents chose to document this special time in their lives by hiring a professional photographer to conduct a newborn photo session. The family and newborn portraits will be a lasting memory of this special and wonderful time for any growing family.

Here are some things to consider when choosing the best newborn photographer for you.

1. Style

Each photographer has their own distinct style of the way they photograph newborn sessions. Check the photographers website for their portfolio and decide if that style of photography you are drawn to. Are you looking for a posed newborn session with lots of props and intricate poses? Are you looking fora studio photographer because photographing in your home is not something you want? Or, are you looking for a newborn photographer in the comfort of your home?

Make sure the photographer you choose is consistent in their photographic style and has enough examples of the style you are looking for on their website.

2.Location and Timing of the Session

Do you want a studio photographer or a session to take place in the comfort of your home? Each photographer has their own timing window of when they will photograph your newborn. If you are looking for a posed newborn photographer, whether the session takes place in their studio or they bring props to you your house -they will usually do the session during the first 7-10 days.

If you prefer to wait a few weeks or even a month to settle in as new family and have more of a relaxed session than a lifestyle newborn photographer who can pretty much take the session any time is the right one for you.

3. Experience and Reviews

Ask around and inquire about the photographer experience. One place you can check for a reference is your local mom’s group. You can also check their Facebook or Google Reviews for the photographer you are considering. You want to make sure previous clients were satisfied with their experience and their feedback resonates with you before you schedule your session.

4. Booking

Most newborn sessions are booked when the mom-to-be is still pregnant. The date is then adjusted once the baby is born and the parents are ready to have their session. Booking the session ahead of time and taking care of that in advance is one less thing to do once the baby arrives. Although, I’ve had plenty of clients that decided last minute to book the session especially given the baby led posing method that I practice during my lifestyle sessions.

5. Siblings, Grandparents and Pets

Do you have siblings or grandparents who live close? It would be nice to add them to your newborn session. Or if you have a pet that you would like to include during our session? They are always welcomed!
