When is the best time to schedule your Baby’s Photo Session

There are few things more special than watching your baby grow and change over their first year of life. One way you can remember all these fleeting moments is through professional photography sessions. There is so much going on in the baby’s first year it is tough to figure out when is the best time for you to schedule these photoshoots.

Newborn Stage (birth -6 weeks)

Most of the time when you think about first baby session you atuomaticly think newborn. First couple of weeks of baby’s life. During this stage babies sleep most of the day and have pretty predictable feeding and sleeping patterns. Even though my sessions are lifestyle and do not depend on that sleeping baby state, I still suggest if you want those sleepy baby images to do a session in the first two weeks of the baby life.

Infant Stage (6 weeks – 6 months)

The next stage of the baby first year is the infant stage. Most 3 or 4 months sessions tame place at that time. In my experience is when you realize you it was too overwhelming for you to have a regular newborn session and you are finally in a place to hire a photographer. During that stage you are more comfortable with your baby, they are on more of a schedule and become more interactive. As they have longer periods of wakefulness and longer sleeping patterns, it is best to schedule the session in between those times.

Sitting/Crawling Stage (6 – 8 months)

As babies reach that stage in their first year they can start sitting. They are generally pretty stable and can sit without assistance offering you wide ranges of poses and things to do with them during your session. Babies at this stage often are more interactive and responsive to their environment, they start to babble, laugh and make facial expressions which makes for adorable photos.

Standing/Walking Stage (9 – 12 months)

Finally, the last stage is when babies reach that 9 to 12 months mark.

They are either crawling or even standing with some help. This might be a hard stage to photograph as they become more active and don’t want to be still for a long period of time. It is a good idea to schedule that session at the comfort of your home so we can work with their needs.

All of these stages offer unique opportinuties to capture your baby in different moments of their first year. Not all babies hit these milestones at the same time so above is a general guideline for yourself and your baby. As your photographer I will help to guide you when it’s the right time for your photo session.
